EAST

Being half Serbian I spent quite some time traveling back and forth between West and East Europe, mostly in the 80’s and the 90’s. It was a different time where borders were either more open (like in former Yugoslavia) or more closed, like in East/West Germany. Visas were needed to enter and pass Czechoslovakia and Hungary, the paperwork was extensive and the checks were frequent. The smell of coal fuelled heaters, goat cheese, homemade slivovitz and polluted air did not change though, those particular smells are still the same and it always throws me back in time.
